A walk in the woods

September 13, 2013

I recently took a walk in the woods on a nice trail nearby, and here are some photos from that walk—with a poem at the end…

Two photos of sunlight through leaves

The trail marker on the right photo kind of looks like a face…

Red leaf and trail marker that looks like a face

Moss was growing on a fallen tree, and a leaf had landed on it—with the neat effect of the leaf being carried by that moss. But carried to what? A sacrifice?

Leaf resting on moss on fallen tree

Then the floating leaf…

Leaf hanging by spider thread

Leaf paused

The leaf floated there,
          mid-air,
as if
by magic,
a startling image
until logic tells me it’s
hanging by a
spider’s thread—
which is a kind of magic
in itself.

Even though the leaf
gently sways in the
breathing air,
it looks as if one of the trees
hit a pause button
on a remote control,
stopping the leaf
before its gravity ride
continued and it
landed Earth-wise.

Which makes me
wonder about moments
that would be easier
with a pause button,
so that I could freeze
everything around me
for just a little bit
to think over a
witty, memorable response
to someone’s question.

Now that photo did give me pause….wondering how did he get that shot so perfectly…enjoyed both the poems and the verse.

Do you mean the photo of the leaf on the moss? I just got down real close to the leaf on the fallen tree trunk. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring my camera with me — so the camera on my phone had to do. But it turned out very well.
