Night Job (flash fiction)

Three swords by Alastair Forbes

Nick was startled to see his wife sitting at the kitchen table, a small juice glass on the table, but containing white wine instead of orange juice.

“What are you doing up?” Nick asked.

Her expression was firm. “I wanted to see what kind of job you’re doing tonight.”

“Honey, I’ve told you it’s easier if you don’t know. Easier if you go to bed and read or watch TV and let me go to my job.”

“Most of the time, I do—even though I worry. I just couldn’t sleep this time, and I just couldn’t focus on the television shows about some families’ ridiculous lives. You took longer than usual in your study.” She pointed at what he carried. “Even more reason for me to worry. It’s a long-sword job. More potential for danger, more enemies.”

He set the sword on the table and sat on another chair and held her hand in his hands and looked into her eyes. “Sweetheart, I’ve told you a million times. The goal is not to use any weapon at all. Slip in and out without being noticed.”

“But things can go wrong.”

“Sometimes they do. But hardly ever. I never would’ve survived this long if I was careless. Some new guys are reckless, but I’m not. Please don’t worry so much.”

Her mouth’s corner tightened, but she looked resolved. “That’s what I get for marrying a ninja.”

Nick looked a touch sad, mixed with a great deal of loving. “Go get some sleep, honey,” he said and kissed her.

She nodded and watched him pick up the long sword and leave out the back door.

    While I’m here…

I do like this. I kind of like that there might be modern Ninja’s for hire.
