Empty chair

December 6, 2012

Claire is no longer
in that chair
over there.

She certainly
started school
with us,
as we distinctly
remember her
answering “here”
when Misses Branch
called out her name.

There was her
long brown hair,
and her little giggle
when someone
made a joke
(Edward typically,
it’s usually him)

Her “here” got softer
and softer,
even Misses Branch
had to repeat her
name because you
could hardly hear her.

But now, there’s no “here”
and Claire’s not there,
and we haven’t seen
hide nor brown hair
of her in I don’t know
how long.

Edward said maybe she
faded away out the window
next to her chair,
but we can’t be
too sure of that.

You capture a child’s voice and innocence so well in this poem…it has a sad undertone that is softened by the style you used…excellent IMHO.

Your follow throughs are remarkable, I can’t help but feel your floating humor in everything you make.
