Squirrel tails

November 16, 2012

I was once told
that the coldness of
an upcoming winter
could be predicted
by the thickness of
squirrels’ tails.

As I watched two squirrels
chase in my backyard,
their tails look right
in the middle:
not particularly bushy
nor particularly scraggly.

And I wondered if their
chasing around and up
trees was playful or hostile—
and what does that predict?

They’re devils plotting against my tulips. So I’d say playfully hostile.

Yeah, they are devious, clever guys who have all day to wreak havoc on tulip bulbs and bird feeders.
