we’re not used to being this hot
around here
we’re talkin’ hot hot crazyhot
and when it’s this hot,
the summery celebrations
fall by the wayside–
of watermelon redslices and
peaches wildjuicy and
freshsweet corn and
gardenripe tomatoes and
smells of freshcut grass.
the grass shrinks from
the heat’s onslaught and
turns drybrown crispy.
Squirrels and birds spring out
in the early morning,
but retreat soon thereafter,
racing for shadecoolness.
We thank the Alaskabreeze
of air conditioning
and the sharpblast of ice cubes.
And when we must venture outside,
we wade through the heavyair
rather than walk,
moving slothslow as we can.
