apples all around (poem 41)

October 15, 2010

apples hanging all around
apples scattered on the ground
apples sweet, apples tart
apples good for your heart
fruit to keep the doctor away
fruit to pick on a crisp fall day
smush ’em into a sauce
squeeze ’em into a cider
bake ’em into a pie
churn ’em into a butter for toast
my granny likes Granny Smith
and spits the seeds forthwith
Jonah prefers Jonagold
thinly sliced and chilly bowled
Mary Jane likes to admire
a big and sweet Empire
and here, just for you
we’ve picked a nice Mutsu
